YZ3, the third issue of Year Zero, is a forward-thinking independent print project that redefines the art of the magazine. It’s aim is challenging current trends where everything is written and displayed as an advertisement, creating instead a collectable compilation of long reads, featuring insights, stories and confessions by more than a 100 participating artists within a multitude of fields, from conceptual and digital art to music and fashion.

A MAGAZINE WITHOUT A BEGINNING OR END

YZ3 forms an interdimensional map through the creative processes of artists and collectives by using the concept of process itself as a framework, deconstructing it into 6 separate stages that can be moved around at will. There is no hierarchy among the stories, no cover feature, and no highlighted artists. Instead, a conceptual map at the introduction proposes various routes to take through the magazine, suggesting different pages and stories for the reader’s particular preference, celebrating non-linearity of the creative process. Even with so many contributors with total creative control, all the stories connect and relate to each other, forming something like a constellation or a living organism.

YZ3 includes up-and-coming but also established artists like Oklou, Lorenzo Senni, Casey MQ, Makeupbrutalism, Sucuk & Bratwurst, Nkisi and Caterina Barbieri. Connections form on their own between stories about the vibrant LGBTQ communities of Beirut and Istanbul, new Palestinian fashion brand Trashy Clothing, underground record labels from North Africa and the Middle East, Toronto based online club Club Quarantine, Uganda based music festival Nyege Nyege, Mexico based music label Naafi, and more, creating a living, breathing ecosystem of ideas and creativity.
