The wall in Sibiu was born under the umbrella of the International Theater Festival. 5 years ago Constantin Chiriac said to me: "Dan, do something here too, I'll give you whatever place you want!"
I chose the wall next to the Theater. A wall in front of the city fortress wall. At the edge, but still in the center. A little secluded, but still visible. It's a place on the edge. Between. At first it was covered by kiosks and bus stops. For three years it has been free like an ultra-panoramic cinema screen. I stayed under the FITS umbrella so as not to shock people (during the theater festival, the people of Sibiu are not scared by anything, yes… but after?). Meanwhile the wall gained a kind of autonomy by becoming a 25-meter-long wall newspaper. A Horizontal Newspaper. The taggers in town leave him alone.
Each project lasts one year. Drawings change, crowd, or disappear depending on events. Critical, social, political. With humor.
Since 2010 in Sibiu you can see what I draw on the walls at MoMa, Tate, Pompidou or at the Biennial of São Paulo. That's if you don't wait for bus 10 and sit with your back to the "work of art". I am happy when I see young people stop and smile in front of the drawings, it hurts when I pass by and ignore them. People take care of their lives. And that brings me down to earth every time.
The horizontal newspaper is a tribute to the city where I was born and live and where in December 1989 I won my freedom on the street.
