Art at Large explores the characteristics of Performance and Installation Art, emerging forms of art in the 1970s that defied the notions and boundaries of medium-based approaches to contemporary art. Being considered as ‘democratic art forms’, they mostly express the intention of both a confrontation and a dialogue, or even interaction with the public. The presence of the artist and the immediate location of installations placed the focus of Performance and Installation art on the here and now. After forty years these art forms have steadily been gaining ground.

Recurring motifs throughout the essays include the supposed authenticity of actions, the indefinite duration and unpredictability of outcomes, and the search for new forms and levels of perception through employing rituals and testing physical and mental limits of endurance.
